Welcome

One of the main reasons of this site is explore the helping profession in the community, and to help educate people on mental health disorders and their treatment. One of the definitions of social work is addressing welfare issues in the community, including poverty, and the treatment of children. However, there is much more than this in being a social worker. Social workers often address larger issues, such as poverty and inequalities between men and women. These social workers work with systems in order to change them to affect changes in a community. Social workers in these situations might advocate for different policies, work with larger organizations such as businesses or the United Way, and get involved in fund raising and grant writing.

However, that is not all there is to social work. Other social workers and psychologists work on a smaller level, such as doing therapy and case management. Social workers and psychologists often work one-on-one with clients on such issues as depression. Social workers often take a broader view in addressing mental health issues, including looking at societal factors, factors such as work and school, other environmental factors, socioeconomic factors, the person's social life, biology and genetics, and one's family life. Psycholgists and psychiatrists also work with people with mental health disorders. Psychologists are similiar to social workers, and often do counseling or research. Psychiatrists work with the medical aspects of mental health. Psychiatrists do not often conduct therapy as social workers and psychologists do. Psychiatrists work more with symptom management through the use of neuroleptic medications, such as antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and antipsychotics.

The most important thing about social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists is their mission to help others, no matter what level.

I hope you enjoy this site and learn something from it.
