Depression is one of the disorders that has gained publicity in the media. According to te Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (2000), approximately one in ten individuals will develop depression during their lifetime. For a diagnosis of clinical depression to be made, symptoms must be present 2 weeks or longer. Clinical Depression is more than just feelings of sadness. The symptoms of Clinica Depression affect all aspects of life, and can be debilitating. lWomen are more likely to report depression than men, and seem to be at higher risk. A concern for those diagnosed with depression is the risk of suicide. People with major depressive disorder often feel like they are not worth anything and that the world would be better without them. Some individuals may start collecting things for a suicide plan, like a gun or stockpiling medications. This should be noted as a strong sign that the person needs treatment and immediate intervention for his/her safety.

Dysthymia is another form of clinical depression. It is considered to be more of a low grade, chronic form of depression. It has the same symptoms as Major Depressive Disorder, but they are usually not the same intensity. In addition, symptoms must be present for two years or longer to make a diagnosis. People can be diagnosed with both Dysthymic Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. This is known as double depression.
