Depression and Recession
Environmental triggers can often affect mental health disorders. Thus, it is not surprised that there may be an increased rate of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions during these difficult financial times (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). However, there is now a new online sponsored guide to help these individuals.
SAMHSA has written a guide called “Getting through Tough Economic Times.” It offers people tips and coping skills to help manage depression and stress, and agencies that can offer direct assistance for those who need it. The guide discusses how unemployment and other problems of the recession can affect one’s mental health, and how different people are affected differently. The guide also mentions some coping skills, such as relying on friends and family, education, exercising, and volunteer work. It is important during these times to stay motivated when job hunting as this can be difficult. Other stress management techniques that can be tried include relaxation techniques, learning new job skills, prayer, and not giving in to negative self-talk.
