Tip Sheet #3: Automatic Thoughts

Automatic thoughts are those that come to us in situations that we hold to be true without any evidence per se. There are some common automatic thoughts in those diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and anxiety problems. They are the following:

  1. Having emotions is bad.
  2. I should never feel mad, anxious, or sad.
  3. I should always feel happy.
  4. I should always love others.
  5. I can’t take being alone.
  6. I can’t take it when others treat me bad.
  7. I should never be in pain.
  8. I must do well in everything.

For all of the automatic thoughts above, write your own challenging statement below.
