Tip Sheet #8: Mindfulness Skills

Being mindful is an important skill to have, especially for those who have problems managing and coping with emotions. Being mindful means being attentive to the environment around us without judging it. Mindfulness means being aware of what is going on in the here and now. Mindfulness also calls for being aware of what is going on in the external environment and for one to not always be inner focused. This helps individuals with strong emotions to refocus away from them. One of the skills mindfulness relies on is observational skills. Below is an exercise in mindfulness to help you start practicing this skill,

Mindfulness with Music

Many of us listen to music to relax, or while we are cleaning or doing other activities. Music is a great background, but this is not practicing mindfulness. Here is a way to practice mindfulness with music.
1. Pick out your favorite selection
2. Sit in a comfortable chair, perhaps close to the speakers or with headphones on.
3. Begin to play the music and close your eyes.
4. Follow the notes and stay focused on the music. If you lose focus, redirect yourself back.
